Urgent Warning: Flash Flood Risks on the Rise in North and North-East Regions

At least five rivers in northern Bangladesh are expected to reach dangerous levels in the coming days due to ongoing rain. This could lead to flooding in low-lying areas nearby.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) reported that moderate to heavy rainfall is predicted in the Surma basin over the next three days. This could cause the river levels to rise significantly. The Teesta River is also likely to approach its danger level in the next two days, putting nearby communities at risk. Rivers such as Sarigowain, Jadukata, and Dhalai may also rise to critical marks soon.

In the past 24 hours, Chhatak in Sunamganj received 112mm of rainfall. Meanwhile, the Dhalai River saw a rise of 125cm. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has warned of light to moderate rainfall continuing in the Chattogram and Sylhet regions. This rain pattern is expected to extend to Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Dhaka divisions over the next few days.

Interestingly, the highest rainfall recorded in the past 24 hours was 212mm at Ramgat in Noakhali. Concurrently, the highest temperature of 36.4°C was noted in Ishurdi, Pabna.
