New Forces Deployed by Syrian Presidency to End Southern Clashes: What’s Behind the Move?

The Syrian government is stepping up efforts to stop violent clashes between Bedouin and Druze fighters in southern Syria. While tensions have been escalating, President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s office has called for everyone to remain calm. Reports indicate that fighting near Suweida has intensified recently, resulting in a staggering number of casualties—almost 600 people have died since the conflict reignited on Sunday.

Eyewitnesses accuse government troops of committing serious abuses, including the killing of Druze civilians. In response to the chaos, Israel has targeted locations in Syria, allegedly to push government forces away from Suweida. On Friday, U.S. officials communicated that a ceasefire might be in the works between Israel and Syria, but there has been no public confirmation from either side.

Ambassador Tom Barrack expressed hope on social media, urging all communities—Druze, Bedouins, and Sunnis—to lay down their arms. His vision includes a united Syrian identity that embraces peace and cooperation with neighboring countries like Turkey and Jordan.

The Druze community, who follow a unique faith with roots in Shia Islam, are particularly vulnerable in this volatile environment. Their historical distrust of the current government complicates the situation further. In light of the unfolding crisis, the UN’s human rights chief, Volker Türk, has reported widespread abuses, including summary executions and arbitrary killings. Allegations target not just the security forces but also armed local groups. Türk stated, “This bloodshed and the violence must stop,” calling for accountability.

In his recent address, Sharaa vowed to protect the Druze, promising that justice would be served to those responsible for the violence. He attributed the ongoing conflict to “outlaw groups” that have refused to engage in dialogue, which has only worsened the situation.
