Chaos Erupts as Vehicle Strikes Crowd in Los Angeles
Early Saturday morning, a vehicle drove into a crowd waiting to enter a venue on a busy Los Angeles street, injuring 30 people. Witnesses described a scene of panic as people rushed to help the victims.
Among those injured, seven were reported in critical condition. Fire Capt. Adam VanGerpen noted that many victims were women gathered in line at Vermont Hollywood, a site hosting a reggae-hip hop event at the time.
After the crash, a bystander attacked the driver, who was later found to have a gunshot wound. It remains unclear if he was shot before or after he struck the crowd. The police are searching for a gunman described as a man in a blue jersey.
Maria Medrano, who sells hot dogs nearby, recounted the moment the car hit her stand. “It crushed our cart, and we barely got out of the way,” she told reporters from the hospital. She also heard what sounded like gunfire moments after the crash.
This incident highlights rising concerns about safety at public events. According to recent statistics, incidents involving vehicles striking crowds have multiplied in urban areas, with 54 such cases reported last year in the U.S. This trend raises questions about how to protect pedestrians in busy venues.
As the investigation continues, local authorities plan to review security measures for future events. Capt. VanGerpen confirmed, “This will be a large investigation with the LAPD.”
For now, the community is left grappling with the aftermath of a chaotic night and hoping for the recovery of those injured.
