ERIE, Pa. — John Oliver, the comedian known for his quirky take on current events, has a special love for minor league baseball. Recently, this passion took a fun turn when the Erie Moon Mammoths made their first appearance at UPMC Park. A record crowd of 7,070 showed up to support them.

Before the game against the Chesapeake Oyster Catchers, Oliver joked, “We’re sending our furry child out into the world. Please take good care of it.” The rebranding started when he featured minor league teams on his show, “Last Week Tonight,” and invited them to pitch ideas for wacky new names. Forty-seven teams responded, including the Erie SeaWolves, who noted that they “play nowhere near the sea.”

Why did Erie stand out? Oliver called it “uniquely eccentric.” He and his team spent six weeks brainstorming before unveiling the Moon Mammoths name and their mascot, Fuzz, a purple mammoth wearing a space helmet.

Typically, rebranding a team takes about 16 months, so this quick turnaround is impressive. Greg Coleman of the Erie team described the experience as surreal and praised Oliver’s detailed involvement.

The name itself has an interesting backstory. It honors George Moon, a man who discovered a prehistoric mammoth bone while scuba diving in 1991. Since the announcement, Moon has become a local celebrity, even catching the ceremonial first pitch from Oliver.

Fans, too, are excited. Coleman reported that the team’s merchandise sales skyrocketed, reaching the equivalent of four years’ worth in just a few weeks. Fans like Karyn Drombosky and Sean Mizerski made the trip from Pittsburgh, wearing homemade tusks and reveling in the fun atmosphere.

“I love minor league baseball,” Oliver remarked. “It’s bold and willing to try anything.” He also participated in the game by being a batboy and leading the crowd in “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” The jersey he wore will be sent to the Baseball Hall of Fame—a fitting tribute to this unique venture.

Erie’s new identity seems to resonate with its community. A recent survey indicated that 78% of minor league fans value team uniqueness and community connection. It shows how local ties and fun promotions can elevate the experience of attending games.

The Moon Mammoths’ next games are set for August 19 and September 12, promising to keep the buzzing excitement alive for fans. As Coleman points out, there will be plenty more Moon Mammoths games next season, continuing this quirky journey into the wild world of minor league baseball.
