The CNN poll also uncovered mixed feelings about specific punitive measures targeting individuals with criminal records. A narrow majority of 37% support sending U.S. citizens convicted of violent crimes to foreign detention facilities, while 43% back efforts to revoke citizenship from certain naturalized citizens with criminal histories.

In a broader context, public opinion on immigration ranks just behind economic issues as a priority for Americans. Twenty percent labeled it the most pressing issue, a noticeable shift that reflects rising Democratic dissent against Trump’s measures.

Protests against deportation policies receive strong backing, with 55% of citizens deeming them justified. This sentiment is especially strong among younger voters (63%) and people of color (59%). Notably, there is widespread opposition, 59%, to deploying National Guard troops for immigration-related demonstrations, even if state governors do not support such action.
