CHARLESTON — Mersadeez Barrett has been honored as one of Eastern Illinois University’s top seniors for 2025. This award, given by the EIU Alumni Association, recognizes students who have made a significant impact through leadership, academics, and community involvement.
To qualify for the Distinguished Senior Award, a student must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 and be graduating in Spring, Summer, or Fall 2025. Barrett’s achievements highlight her character and her contributions to both the university and the local community.
Barrett, who hails from Danville, received this recognition at an awards ceremony on April 26 at the Tarble Arts Center on campus. This honor reflects her commitment to excellence and her positive influence at EIU.
In another recognition, the University of Alaska Fairbanks announced its dean’s and chancellor’s lists for Spring 2025, celebrating excellent academic performance. Students with a GPA of 3.9 or higher are on the chancellor’s list, while those with a GPA between 3.5 and 3.89 appear on the dean’s list.
This semester, Veronica Sasseen from Danville made the chancellor’s list, and Vashti Skinner from Perrysville, Ind., earned a spot on the dean’s list. UAF has a strong reputation as a leading institution for research, particularly concerning the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions, thanks to its Land, Sea, and Space Grant status.
Lastly, Shyanne MacKenzie Steward from Covington, Ind., graduated with a Master of Science in Art Therapy Counseling from Emporia State University in May 2025. With more than 500 graduates this year, Emporia State is known for a diverse range of academic programs across various fields, including applied health sciences, business, and arts.
This gathering of achievements from across multiple universities showcases the hard work and dedication of students today. They are shaping the future and contributing to their communities, just as past generations have done. Such accomplishments not only highlight individual success but also reflect the continued value of education in driving societal progress.
