Crazy for Bananza? Discover the Dev Team’s Must-Play Hit Without a Switch 2!

Many gamers feel a twinge of excitement as the release of Donkey Kong Bananza approaches. It’s a popular topic in gaming forums, sparking discussion about anticipation and new features. But if you’re enjoying the original Nintendo Switch, there’s no need to rush. One standout title on the console is Super Mario Odyssey.

I was a latecomer to the Switch, finally getting an OLED model in 2022. My timing was almost perfect since I caught COVID shortly after and spent my isolation diving deep into games. Pokémon Brilliant Diamond was my first pick, but I waited until recently to experience the joyful platforming of Super Mario Odyssey. Spoiler alert: it lives up to the hype!

In Odyssey, Mario’s classic nemesis, Bowser, has kidnapped Princess Peach (again!). He plans an extravagant wedding, and it’s up to Mario, aided by a ghostly companion named Cappy, to save her. Cappy adds a fresh twist to the gameplay, allowing Mario to “possess” other characters and creatures.

This ability opens up fun gameplay options. For example, Mario can take control of a Uproot to grab coins high above or swim faster by possessing a fish. While it raises questions about the ethics of possession, the focus is purely on finding those shiny moons scattered throughout the game.

Each kingdom presents a challenge, requiring Mario to collect a set number of moons to power up the Odyssey—his unique ship shaped like a top hat. The moons are well-placed, so players won’t feel overwhelmed or forced to grind for them.

A delightful surprise awaits in the form of 2D levels hidden in each kingdom. These retro sections bring back memories of Mario’s early days in 2D platforming, complete with 8-bit sprites. It’s a charming change of pace.

Upon its release, Super Mario Odyssey quickly became a beloved classic, and today, it remains a must-play. Whether you’re a newcomer or a seasoned veteran, there’s something special for everyone. As new games launch, revisiting Odyssey can remind players of the rich history and evolution of Mario games, showcasing the series’ ability to blend nostalgia with modern gameplay.

In terms of popularity, as of 2023, nearly 34 million copies of Super Mario Odyssey have sold worldwide, underlining its status as a favorite among gamers of all ages. With fresh discussions around new releases and nostalgia for past classics, the gaming community continues to thrive.
