Tragic Incident: Man in Heavy Metal Necklace Fatally Pulled into MRI Machine

A tragic incident occurred at Nassau Open MRI in Westbury, New York, where a 61-year-old man died after being pulled into an MRI machine while wearing a heavy metal necklace.

The unnamed man entered the MRI room without permission while the machine was operating. A patient at the facility, who is his wife, confirmed his identity as Keith Jones-McAllister. She had called him in for assistance after her own scan.

Jones-McAllister was wearing a 20-pound chain, typically used in his weight training. Tragically, as he stepped closer, the magnetic field pulled him into the machine. His wife described the horrifying moment when he went limp after waving goodbye.

Emergency response was swift, but despite efforts from the medical staff, he was taken to the hospital, where he passed away the following day. The Nassau County Police Department is investigating the incident, noting that MRI machines have powerful magnetic fields that can attract not only metal objects but potentially harm patients and staff.

It’s critical for patients to be warned about metal items before entering an MRI room. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration states that magnetic fields can draw many objects, including keys and oxygen tanks, posing serious risks.

This incident isn’t isolated. A similar tragedy happened in 2001 when a young boy died after an oxygen tank was propelled toward him during an MRI scan. Such cases highlight the need for stricter safety protocols in medical settings.

MRI machines offer crucial diagnostic imaging; however, the dangers they pose must be clearly communicated. Regular training for medical staff can help prevent future accidents by ensuring safety measures are followed meticulously.
