Kolkata, July 21, 2025 — Today, the Indian Navy celebrated an important moment with the launch of the Yard 3034 (Ajay), the last in the series of Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts (ASW SWC). This took place at the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata, with Vice Admiral Kiran Deshmukh present for the occasion. In a nod to naval traditions, Mrs. Priya Deshmukh performed the ceremonial launch.
The launch of Ajay wraps up a project that produced eight ASW SWCs, showcasing India’s shipbuilding skills under the Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. Notably, the first ship in this class, INS Arnala, was commissioned just last month, while the second ship will be delivered in August 2025.
Ajay is built for anti-submarine tasks in shallow waters. It comes equipped with advanced technology, including:
- Hull Mounted Sonar
- Low Frequency Variable Depth Sonar (LFVDS)
- Torpedoes and Anti-Submarine Rockets
- NSG-30 Naval Gun
- 12.7 mm Stabilized Remote-Controlled Gun (SRCG)
Its powerful diesel engines paired with waterjet technology boost its agility in coastal areas.
The ASW SWC class, including Ajay, significantly enhances India’s ability to monitor and respond to underwater threats. These ships are crucial for operations in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), focusing on both defense and strategy.
Remarkably, the Ajay project highlights that over 80% of its components are made in India. This emphasis on indigenous production marks a significant stride towards a self-reliant defense industry. According to a recent report by the Ministry of Defence, such initiatives contribute to a more robust defense manufacturing framework in India.
The completion of Yard 3034 (Ajay) not only signifies the end of a successful shipbuilding contract but also symbolizes India’s commitment to a capable and self-sufficient defense sector. This aligns with the vision of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, celebrating India’s journey toward greater independence and strength in defense capabilities.
