For over 75 years, In-N-Out Burger has been a cherished part of California’s fast-food scene. Its iconic Double-Doubles and palm tree logo are easily recognized in the West. But now, the family-owned chain is headed east. Lynsi Snyder, the billionaire owner and CEO, recently shared her reasons for this shift.

Snyder explained on the “Relatable” podcast that while California has its perks, it’s tough for families and businesses. “Raising a family is not easy here,” she noted. This sentiment reflects a larger trend — many companies and wealthy individuals are leaving California. Businesses like Tesla and Chevron have moved as they face rising costs and regulatory hurdles.

Currently, In-N-Out operates over 400 locations across eight states, including Texas and Utah. Snyder has long cherished the uniqueness of the brand. In a 2018 interview, she said, “You put us in every state, and it takes away some of its luster.” However, things have shifted for the company. In January 2023, In-N-Out announced plans to open a corporate office in Franklin, Tennessee, while also consolidating operations in Baldwin Park, where it all began.

This move represents a critical change for Snyder. The journey of In-N-Out started in 1948 when Harry and Esther Snyder opened their first drive-through in Baldwin Park. The chain became an emblem of California culture, loved by everyone from chefs to celebrities, including Julia Child.

When Lynsi took the helm in 2010, she became one of the youngest billionaires in the U.S. She aimed to honor her grandparents’ legacy by keeping the focus on simplicity. Despite earlier statements about limiting expansion east of Texas, her outlook has evolved.

“We’ll still have the bulk of our stores in California,” Snyder reassured. Yet, the establishment of a corporate office in Tennessee hints at a notable shift in the company’s direction.

Snyder remains cautious about expanding too quickly. “Florida has begged us, and we’re still saying no,” she admitted, highlighting her careful approach.
