Join the Fun: UH Mānoa Hosts Hawaiʻi’s Inaugural Sports & Family Expo Promoting Health and Fitness

The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa recently shone at the first-ever Hawaiʻi Family & Sports Expo, held on July 20 at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center. This event was all about encouraging fitness and embracing healthy lifestyles.

Partnering with several organizations, the expo showcased contributions from the UH Mānoa Athletics Department and the College of Education’s Department of Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Science. It also featured the Hawaiʻi Concussion Awareness Management Program (HCAMP) and the Mānoa Bookstore, making it a community affair.

Hosted by Chad Owens, a former UH football star, the expo brought together families and fitness enthusiasts. Matt Elliott, the athletics director, highlighted the importance of community engagement. “It’s inspiring to see our student-athletes and coaches giving back,” he said.

Attendees enjoyed a vibrant atmosphere with a tailgating area featuring merchandise, games, and chances to meet Rainbow Warrior and Wahine athletes. Participants could also win prizes and explore academic offerings from the College of Education.

Dean Nathan Murata noted, “Our involvement at the expo reflects our mission to promote wellness and lifelong learning.” Interactive sports clinics and activities like pickleball and tennis kept visitors engaged throughout the day.

Local healthcare providers and wellness vendors added to the mix, offering demos, giveaways, and valuable information. In a recent survey, 76% of attendees expressed that such events helped them feel more connected to health initiatives in their community.

Emily Morden, a UH alumna and event coordinator, reflected on the expo’s success: “There was something for everyone. It was fantastic to see how involved UH was in promoting health and sports.”
