University Area CDC Board Members Share Insights on Combs’ Legacy and Future Leadership Transition

For nearly 30 years, the University Area Community Development Corporation (UACDC) has been a vital force in an underserved North Tampa community near the University of South Florida. This nonprofit focuses on revitalizing the area by enhancing housing, job opportunities, education, and the arts. Sarah Combs has led these initiatives since early 2015, expanding programs and facilities to strengthen community ties.

In August, after 15 years in various leadership roles, Combs will step down to become CEO of Metropolitan Ministries. To find her successor, UACDC has engaged Catalyst Consulting Services for a national search, aiming to have a new leader by September.

Board members shared their thoughts on Combs’ impact and what they seek in the next leader.

Eric M. Eisenberg, Board Chair and USF’s representative, highlights the incredible work UACDC has done. “Sarah has fostered genuine engagement with community members and has laid a strong foundation for future growth,” he says. He emphasizes the importance of continuing projects like the cultural campus next to Harvest Hope Park and expanding housing initiatives.

Vice Chair Leon Paige, a former Hillsborough County Sheriff’s officer, notes the significant transformation of the University Area’s reputation. “UACDC has made lasting changes in housing and community support,” he explains. He credits Combs with foresight and planning that earned the organization national recognition.

Nealy Wheat, the Board Treasurer, stresses that Combs has positioned UACDC for long-term success, enhancing fundraising efforts and real estate ventures. “The next leader should build on this momentum and deepen donor relationships,” she states.

Tony Coleman, a long-time board member, believes the next CEO should maintain a strong commitment to community advocacy. “We hope our next leader brings innovative ideas in affordable housing and job growth,” he urges.

Gene Marshall, a retired JPMorgan Chase executive, feels confident about the transition. “With a solid foundation in place, the new leader will be well-equipped to advance our mission,” he says.

As UACDC looks to the future, it must balance its core mission with new ideas. The community has made strides in workforce development, housing, and the arts, reflecting its enduring spirit. This new chapter promises opportunities for growth and further transformation, proving that change can lead to progress.
