A Chinese cargo spacecraft named Tianzhou 9 recently made its way to the Tiangong space station, delivering vital supplies.
Launch took place on July 14 at 5:34 p.m. EDT, using a Long March 7 rocket. Just three hours later, at 8:52 p.m. EDT, Tianzhou 9 successfully docked with the station’s Tianhe core module, according to China’s human spaceflight agency, CMSA.
Inside Tianzhou 9 was 7.2 tons (about 6.5 metric tons) of cargo. This included 1.65 tons of food intended for the crew of Shenzhou 20, who have been at Tiangong since April, and provisions for Shenzhou 21, which will launch in October for a six-month mission.
Tianzhou 9 also brought two advanced Feitian spacesuits, designed for better durability. Fitness is crucial for astronauts, so the spacecraft delivered a core exercise device to help them stay strong while in space and to assist with their recovery once back on Earth.
Li Yinghui from the China Astronaut Research and Training Center emphasized the importance of core strength. “The stronger our astronauts are, the longer and farther we can go. Core strength is crucial for space operations and future missions to the moon,” he stated.
Among the scientific equipment on board were samples for cellular biology experiments. These include bone stem cells to study bone loss in microgravity, heart cells to explore therapeutic options, and samples related to anti-aging research. Another exciting project will involve creating brain-like models called organoids, using pluripotent stem cells.
The Tianzhou 9 itself features significant upgrades. It has a larger payload capacity and can be prepared for emergency launches within three months. “Tianzhou 9 is the first cargo spacecraft with this emergency capability,” explained Li Zhiyong from the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation.
Tianzhou 9’s mission highlights China’s advancements in space exploration. The first Tianzhou craft launched in 2017, marking the beginning of this ambitious project. While Tiangong is about 20% the size of the International Space Station, plans are in place to expand it further.
