Revolutionizing Travel: Over 78% of Indian Railways Tracks Now Support Speeds Over 110 Km/h!

The Indian Railways has made major strides in upgrading its tracks to support faster trains. Now, trains like the Vande Bharat Express can run at speeds over 130 km/h.

Recent updates from the Railways Ministry show that more than 78% of the rail network in India can now handle speeds above 110 km/h. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the progress made over the last decade, citing improvements such as the installation of 60 kg rails and modern maintenance equipment. This has significantly boosted the speed potential of the tracks.

Back in 2014, only 6.3% of tracks—about 5,036 kilometers—could support speeds over 130 km/h. Fast forward to 2025, and that number has jumped to 21.8%, reaching 23,010 kilometers. Tracks accommodating speeds between 110 km/h and 130 km/h also show large improvements, now making up 56.6% of the total network. Meanwhile, tracks under the 110 km/h capacity have reduced from 60.4% in 2014 to just 21.6% in 2025.

Overall, the total railway track length has expanded from 79,342 km in 2014 to 105,672 km in 2025—an impressive increase of 33.2%. The Vande Bharat trains, which are classified as semi-high-speed, have a design speed of 180 km/h and a maximum operational speed of 160 km/h. Their average speed can vary depending on track conditions and scheduled stops.

Recent reports indicate that this focus on speed is not just about efficiency; it also aims to enhance the passenger experience. As more people take to the rails for travel, the demand for faster and more reliable service is on the rise.

In terms of social media reaction, hashtags related to the Vande Bharat trains have been trending, highlighting public interest in rail travel innovations. Users are sharing their travel experiences and the benefits of faster, more comfortable journeys.
