Discover Delicious Food and Vital Resources at the Appreciation Barbecue: Your Guide to the Conejos County Fair!

The San Luis Valley Agriculture Coalition recently held its ninth annual Appreciation Barbecue and Resource Fair on July 20 at Casa Blanca Park in Center. This local organization unites community members, agencies, and advocates to support migrant and seasonal workers in the San Luis Valley.

Each year, the coalition provides free food to agricultural workers and their families. This gesture not only shows appreciation for their hard work but also connects them with helpful resources available throughout the Valley.

This year, several organizations were present to share valuable resources with attendees. Participants could find information from the Migrant Education Program, Rio Grande County Public Health, and the San Luis Valley Local Food Coalition, among others.

The resource booths offered pamphlets, water bottles, tote bags, Covid tests, snacks, clothing, and hygiene products. This variety of support highlights the community’s commitment to caring for its farm workers.

Local worker George Venzor shared his thoughts about the event. He expressed gratitude in Spanish, saying, “I have been a seasonal worker most of my life… I am thankful for the food I am eating today. This party helped me and my family.” His words resonate with the many workers who often face long hours and limited time off.

Carol Gurule, Vice Chairman of the Board for the San Luis Valley Agricultural Coalition, reflected on the event’s significance. “It’s lovely to see everyone come together. Many workers only get one day off a week. By providing a meal and resources, we show them they are valued and important to our community.”

The coalition aims to improve access to services for these essential workers and their families, allowing them to thrive in their daily lives. As we look back at the struggles faced by agricultural workers over the years, it’s heartening to see community efforts continuing to grow.
