George Santos Begins Seven-Year Prison Sentence: What It Means for His Future and Political Landscape

Disgraced former congressman George Santos has started his prison sentence, facing over seven years for serious charges like wire fraud and identity theft. The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed he is now at the Federal Correctional Institution in Fairton, New Jersey.

At just 37, Santos pleaded guilty to these charges last year, marking a significant downfall for the once-promising New York politician. He was removed from Congress after it was revealed that he lied about his background and used campaign funds for personal luxuries.

Before reporting to prison, Santos shared a message on X, saying his “rhinestones are packed.” He added that while he might be stepping away, “legends never truly exit.”

The federal government accused Santos of misusing campaign funds, claiming he laundered money for personal expenses, illegally claimed unemployment benefits, and misled the Federal Election Commission (FEC). Prosecutors detailed that he charged over $44,000 to his campaign using credit cards belonging to unsuspecting contributors.

In court, Santos admitted to theft and acknowledged taking funds he wasn’t entitled to, resulting in a hefty restitution order of at least $374,000. Post-sentencing, he even tried to earn money on Cameo, a site where fans can buy personalized videos from celebrities.

Santos gained fame in 2022 when he defeated a Democratic incumbent, flipping a district in New York’s Long Island and Queens to the Republicans. However, his victory was overshadowed by revelations from a New York Times article. It exposed that he fabricated much of his résumé, falsely claiming academic credentials and a career at firms like Citigroup and Goldman Sachs.

This path of deception included a claim that his mother survived the September 11 attacks, leading to multiple investigations. By 2023, Santos faced 23 felony charges, making him the first congressman expelled in over 20 years and only the sixth in American history.
