Expert Alerts: School Lunch Prices Set to Rise as Nationwide Food Costs Surge

Rising food prices are impacting school meal programs across the country, including in the DMV area. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, prices are expected to rise by 3% this year. Diane Pratt-Heavner from the School Nutrition Association pointed out that school meal budgets are already very tight. Federal funding often falls short of actual meal costs.

Families have noticed this trend during their grocery trips, and it’s a reality for schools too. Pratt-Heavner explained that the challenges of providing healthy meals on a limited budget are becoming more serious.

Recently, Charles County Public Schools announced a price increase for student meals starting this fall. Breakfast and lunch prices will go up by 10 cents. For elementary students, breakfast will be $1.45, and lunch will be $2.90. Youngers in middle and high school will pay $1.60 for breakfast and $3.15 for lunch. CCPS Communications Specialist Sara K. Taylor attributed this increase to the rising costs of food and labor, noting that meal prices had remained stable since 2021.

Nationwide, many schools are grappling with similar issues. A recent survey by the School Nutrition Association found that 83% of school districts are facing increased food costs. This makes it harder to prepare and serve nutritious meals, which is vital for students’ growth and learning.

In an era where childhood obesity is a growing concern, healthy school meals are essential. However, the rising costs could hinder schools from providing the balanced meals that students need.
