Discover Reem AlZarouni: UAE’s Reading Champion Revolutionizing Climate Change Solutions with Bots!

Meet Reem AlZarouni, a remarkable 14-year-old from Al-Ittihad National Private School in the UAE. She’s not just a talented young reader; she’s also a tech innovator. Her latest invention, the “PermaBot,” is designed to monitor permafrost, the frozen ground in some of the coldest regions, which can pose serious climate risks. As permafrost thaws, it can release harmful methane gas, making it a pressing environmental issue.

“Permafrost problems are often ignored, so I created this bot to keep communities informed and safe,” Reem explained in an interview with Khaleej Times.

Reem’s passion for climate action earned her a spot among the top 30 winners in UNICEF’s Net Zero Hero competition. She tackled issues like permafrost melting, plastic use, and waste recycling. “Winning wasn’t just about the award; it taught me that age doesn’t define our ability to make a difference,” she shared. “I incorporate sustainability into my daily life and inspire others to do the same.”

Her journey into reading laid the foundation for her innovative mindset. Winning the Arab Reading Challenge pushed her to think critically and creatively. “This was a defining moment for me,” she said. “It’s a big honor to represent my country, which encourages us to aim high.”

Reem believes that balancing interests requires organization and prioritizing what resonates with you. “For me, working on what I love feels like free time,” she said. Support from her family has been crucial in her achievements, providing encouragement at every step.

For young individuals pursuing their dreams, Reem has a powerful message: “Trust in your ideas and ability to create change. You don’t have to wait to grow up; start taking small steps now.”

With environmental issues increasingly in the spotlight, Reem’s work touches on a crucial theme. According to recent studies, the thawing of permafrost could contribute up to 1.5 degrees Celsius to global warming by 2100. These alarming figures highlight the importance of innovative solutions to combat climate change.

As we see more young voices entering the conversation on climate and technology, Reem’s journey serves as an inspiring example of how creativity and dedication can drive real change, even from a young age.
