Border Dispute Between Thailand and Cambodia: A Complex Situation
Recently, Thailand and Cambodia faced a severe border conflict. This situation escalated quickly and resulted in tragic losses, with at least 34 people dead and over 168,000 displaced.
U.S. President Donald Trump stepped in, suggesting to both leaders that if they didn’t resolve their issues, they might risk trade agreements with the United States. This prompted Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet to announce a willingness for an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire.” He mentioned that Trump relayed Thailand’s agreement to halt attacks after conversations with Thai leaders.
However, Thailand expressed caution. Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai agreed in principle to a ceasefire but emphasized the need for “sincere intention” from Cambodia. He urged for rapid discussions to find a peaceful solution.
The conflict ignited on Thursday because of a landmine explosion that injured five Thai soldiers. Both sides accused each other of starting the clashes, recalling their ambassadors and closing border crossings.
Despite diplomatic efforts, fighting persisted on Sunday. Colonel Richa Suksowanont from the Thai army reported artillery fire from Cambodia, targeting civilian areas and historical sites, while Thai forces retaliated. He stated that any peace talks depend on Cambodia showing good faith.
The violence has significantly impacted civilians. Many have been forced to evacuate. Pichayut Surasit, an air-conditioning technician, returned home to protect his family amid the chaos. He expressed his deep worry for his loved ones, hoping for a return to normalcy soon.
Local vendors like Bualee Chanduang are also affected, as they seek rapid negotiations to end the violence. “I pray for God to help that both sides can agree to talk and end this war,” she said.
The United Nations Security Council has urged the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to play an active role in mediating peace. Human Rights Watch has criticized the use of cluster munitions, stressing the need to protect civilians.
This border area has been a point of dispute for decades, with various confrontations throughout history. However, recent tensions seem particularly intense and prolonged. A notable incident occurred in May, with the death of a Cambodian soldier, disrupting diplomatic relations and stirring political unrest in Thailand.
