Why the Vande Bharat Express’s Average Speed Has Decreased: Insights from Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

Vande Bharat Express is becoming a favorite among travelers in India. Since its launch in 2019, this train has been known for its comfort and luxury. One of the biggest draws is the way it cuts down travel time, making journeys quicker and more convenient.

NCP MP Dr. Fauzia Khan brought up an important point. She highlighted that the average speed of the Vande Bharat has decreased from 84.48 km/h in 2020-21 to 76.25 km/h in 2023-24. This drop is mainly due to unfinished track upgrades and infrastructural issues. She pressed the government for more details on steps being taken to speed up modernization.

In his response, Vaishnaw noted that Vande Bharat trains are designed for high speeds—up to 160 km/h. Factors like track quality, scheduled stops, and maintenance can affect the average speed. This means that improvements in these areas could help the trains perform closer to their potential.

A recent report from the Indian Railways indicates that they are working to enhance infrastructure. Upgrading tracks and improving signals is crucial for the future. Many passengers have shared their experiences on social media, expressing both love for the comfort of these trains and concerns about delays.

In comparison, other countries have successfully integrated high-speed rail systems. For instance, Japan’s Shinkansen, known as the bullet train, has effectively maintained high speeds since its launch in the mid-20th century. India’s effort reflects a growing trend towards modern, efficient public transport.
