Delhi LG Unveils Revamped Roshanara Club: A Historic Milestone for Delhi Residents!

On July 27, Delhi’s Lt Governor, VK Saxena, unveiled the restored Roshanara Club, a historic site known as the birthplace of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This club, which spans 22 acres, has been a cultural and sporting landmark for over a century.

Saxena expressed pride in the restoration, congratulating Delhi’s citizens. He noted that many historic structures have been revived in recent years, with plans for more in the future.

During a visit in January 2023, the Lt Governor discovered the club in a state of disrepair, with a crumbling facade and damaged facilities. In response, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) took over the club on September 29, 2023, launching a comprehensive restoration plan.

This project aimed not only to preserve the club’s classic architectural beauty—like its European-style doors and antique chandeliers—but also to modernize it with amenities to meet today’s recreational needs. The DDA highlighted that the club now features a lounge, dining area, kids’ play zone, gym, and rooms for activities like yoga, billiards, and reading.

Outdoor upgrades include various tennis courts, cricket practice pitches, a mini-football area, basketball courts, and a jogging park. With these enhancements, Roshanara Club is set to become a vibrant hub for sports and culture once again.

Restoring heritage sites can significantly impact local tourism and community pride. According to a recent survey by the India Tourism Statistics, heritage tourism is on the rise, with over 30% of tourists seeking experiences at historical sites. The Roshanara Club’s renovation aligns with this trend, promising to attract visitors and reinforce Delhi’s rich history.

As we see more heritage restorations, they remind us of the importance of preserving our past while catering to modern needs. This initiative reflects a growing awareness of heritage’s role in society, fostering a connection between generations.
