The divide among Republican lawmakers surrounding the Jeffrey Epstein case is growing. As President Trump attempts to shift attention away from it, some in his party are pushing for transparency.

A recent vote by the GOP-majority House Oversight subcommittee to subpoena the Department of Justice for Epstein’s files shows increasing pressure. House Oversight Chair James Comer has also called for a deposition from Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s associate, who is currently serving a 20-year sentence for sex trafficking.

Maxwell’s recent meetings with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche have fueled more questions. Some Republicans are unhappy with how the DOJ is handling Epstein’s files and are urging the administration to release more information. Missouri Rep. Eric Burlison spoke out, criticizing the raised expectations for new revelations about Epstein, calling this a “political mistake.”

Burlison noted that many concerned constituents are reaching out to his office about potential government secrets regarding Epstein. With lawmakers back in their districts for August recess, they can expect to face these questions directly.

Utah Rep. Mike Kennedy provided a striking comparison, describing the Epstein files as “a festering wound that could get worse if not addressed.” He strongly advocates for full transparency, stressing the need to release the files while protecting the identities of the victims.

Meanwhile, Reps. Thomas Massie and Ro Khanna are attempting to bypass Speaker Mike Johnson to force a vote on a bill that demands the release of the Epstein files. Massie, who has previously disagreed with Trump on certain issues, needs enough support from House members to make this happen.

Johnson insists he supports transparency but describes the proposed petition as “reckless” and poorly drafted, as it lacks adequate protection for victims. He also emphasizes that Congress can’t mandate a judge to release documents, as they must act independently.
