Colorado Professor Celebrates ‘South Park’ Trump Satire While Expressing Frustration with Other Comics’ Hesitance

A Colorado professor found it “hilarious” how South Park tackled former President Donald Trump in its Season 27 premiere. He wishes more comedians on the left would be bold in their critiques, similar to the show’s approach.

South Park is set in a fictional Colorado town and follows four school friends: Cartman, Stan, Kyle, and Kenny. In the new episode, titled “Sermon on the ‘Mount,’” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone took aim at Trump. They depicted him with exaggerated features using both animation and a live AI deepfake, presenting various unflattering images of him alongside satirical references.

This episode premiered just hours after Paramount Global announced a significant deal with Parker and Stone, bringing South Park to their Paramount+ streaming service, along with 50 new episodes. This deal is reportedly worth $1.5 billion and occurs as Skydance prepares to acquire Paramount.

The show is known for poking fun at everyone, including Trump and even the broadcasting company itself. The creators didn’t shy away from mentioning Paramount’s $16 million settlement with Trump regarding a 60 Minutes segment, as well as the cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Nick Marx, a film and media studies professor at Colorado State University, praised South Park for its take on Trump, calling it a refreshing approach amid a sea of less daring commentary from other comedians. He expressed frustration that comedians often miss the opportunity to use similar tactics in their jokes.

Marx believes humor can be a powerful way to deal with political personalities, especially those as polarizing as Trump. He’s waiting for more figures in comedy to adopt this brave style.

The White House did not appreciate the episode’s barbs. Spokesperson Taylor Rogers dismissed the show as outdated and irrelevant, insisting Trump has accomplished more than any president in recent history.

At the San Diego Comic-Con, Parker downplayed the criticism, saying, “We’re terribly sorry,” humorously hinting at their intent to continue creating topical content. Parker also confirmed that, contrary to rumors, no episodes are pre-made; they react to current events in real-time.

As of now, South Park Season 27 airs on Comedy Central and is available to stream on Paramount+. The blend of satire with current events keeps the show both relevant and poignant in today’s entertainment landscape.
