A new system launched by Turkey’s Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is changing how consumers access food safety information. Starting today, every food business must display a unique QR code. This code is easy to scan, giving customers instant access to important details about the establishment’s inspection history.

Previously, this QR code system was optional. However, now it’s mandatory for all grocery stores, butcher shops, restaurants, and other places where food is sold. Shoppers can use the mobile app “Tarim Cebimde” to scan the QR code. This will show them the business’s registration number, name, location, and the date of the most recent inspection.

Cigdem Kurtar, from the Ministry’s Directorate General of Food and Control, emphasizes the importance of transparency in food safety. She noted that while production facilities can still use the system voluntarily, retail locations must now comply. Business owners can generate their QR codes for free and simply need to display them where customers can see.

This initiative is all about protecting consumer rights and making inspections clearer. If customers notice any issues after scanning the code, they can report their findings through the Alo 174 Food Line. It’s a simple step that encourages accountability in the food industry.

Interestingly, studies show that consumers are increasingly interested in food transparency. A 2023 survey revealed that over 75% of respondents prefer to shop at stores that provide visible information about food safety. This growing demand for information aligns perfectly with the new QR code system.
