Exciting Leadership Change: University of Miami Welcomes New Provost!

Exciting news for the University of Miami! Joel Hassman Samuels has been named the new executive vice president for academic affairs and provost. With over 20 years in higher education, Samuels brings a wealth of experience from his time as dean at the University of South Carolina’s College of Arts and Sciences.

Samuels, who starts on August 11, is praised for his unique blend of expertise as a law professor, researcher, and administrator. University president Joseph Echevarria describes him as a “proven and dynamic leader.” During his time at USC, Samuels oversaw a budget exceeding $450 million and significantly boosted federal grant funding—a remarkable 70% increase, breaking the $50 million mark for the first time in the college’s history.

His leadership also saw the college grow to support over 10,000 students, accounting for nearly half of USC’s credit-hour production. He was instrumental in securing a historic $75 million donation, the largest in USC’s history, which will enhance teaching and support student internships.

Samuels has an impactful academic background. He graduated magna cum laude from Princeton and earned his law degree from the University of Michigan, where he was a Clarence Darrow Scholar. His work as the executive director of South Carolina’s Rule of Law Collaborative secured over $27 million in federal grants, making him one of the most funded social scientists at his institution.

“I am excited to collaborate with President Echevarria and the faculty at the U to advance our mission,” Samuels expressed. He aims to leverage innovative research and creative achievements to enhance student experiences and community engagement.

Notably, Samuels takes over from Guillermo “Willy” Prado, who filled the role for two years. Echevarria acknowledged Prado’s dedication, mentioning significant initiatives that took place under his leadership, like the creation of a new Center for Academic Navigation and Success.

In addition to his new role, the University is establishing a chief scientific officer position to strengthen its commitment to research and innovation. This reflects the university’s goal to distinguish itself nationally and globally in STEM fields.

Samuels also has an interesting side story—he once led a roller derby team, helping the Columbia QuadSquad rise from an unranked status to a No. 26 ranking among over 350 teams. This experience emphasized teamwork and community, values he plans to instill at the University of Miami.
