Messaging has been disabled on the women’s dating safety app, Tea, after a significant data breach exposed private messages and images. The company recently announced that some direct messages were accessed during this cyber incident.
This app, with 1.6 million users, helps women perform background checks on potential dates. It first reported the hack in late July, raising concerns among its user base.
In a statement, Tea said they are working hard to improve security. They will also offer free identity protection to users whose information may have been compromised. This protection could include credit monitoring and fraud alerts.
Rachael Percival, a cybersecurity expert, emphasized the risks involved with the leaked messages, which reportedly include sensitive topics such as abortions and infidelity. She advised users to take up the identity protection services offered by Tea to safeguard their personal information.
Kevin Marriott, from a cybersecurity firm, noted the seriousness of the situation, particularly for users who have shared personal details like addresses. He warned that the hackers might misuse the stolen information, which includes images and direct messages.
The Tea app allows women to check if potential partners have a history of being married or are registered sex offenders. It also offers reverse image searches to help avoid “catfishing,” where individuals use false online identities. One of its controversial features is sharing experiences about men, aimed at identifying red flags, which could indicate abusive behavior.
Tea has become increasingly popular, but it also faces criticism for potentially being anti-men. The app revealed that hackers accessed around 72,000 user images, including some meant for identity verification. Although the app’s policy states that this data should be deleted immediately after use, many users feel uneasy about the breach.
