Ohio University Libraries Propel Open Access Publishing: A Game-Changer for Researchers and Readers

Ohio University Libraries is excited to share that OHIO faculty have published over 223 Open Access journal articles through partnerships with major publishers like Elsevier, Springer, and Wiley. This collaboration has saved faculty more than $744,000 in Article Publishing Charges (APCs).

Open Access publishing allows anyone to access scholarly work without paying fees. The upfront costs covered by APCs help prestigious publishers make research widely available, boosting the visibility and impact of faculty research.

Since 2022, Ohio University Libraries has provided funds through OhioLINK, a statewide academic library group, to help cover these publication costs. Additional agreements are in place with publishers like BioMedCentral and SpringerOpen to fund specific charges.

Due to growing interest in this initiative, OhioLINK’s funds for APCs are likely to run out this fall. Faculty planning to publish should act quickly to secure funding, as it may be depleted sooner than in past years.

Here are some essential points for OHIO faculty:

  1. Not all journals are included in the funding agreement, so check before submitting. View all supported publishers here.

  2. The author affiliated with OhioLINK needs to be the corresponding author, handling all communication during publication.

  3. Authors must verify their OhioLINK affiliation during the editing process after acceptance.

  4. Some publishers limit the number of articles supported each year, so early submissions are encouraged.

  5. This initiative benefits all qualified authors, not just faculty members.

If you have questions about this process, Ohio University Libraries staff are here to help. In addition to these agreements, they provide guidance on open access publishing, compliance with funding mandates, and resources for researchers. For more details, check the Libraries’ guide on open access options.

Supporting open access publishing is crucial for advancing research accessibility. With initiatives like these, Ohio University Libraries and OhioLINK are paving the way for a more open and collaborative research environment.
