West Virginia University (WVU) President Michael T. Benson recently embarked on his first “Welcome Home Tour,” visiting 18 counties across the state. During his trip, he stopped at the beautiful Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park, engaging with local students, alumni, and donors.
Benson, who is also a history professor, expressed his enthusiasm for exploring historical sites like Blennerhassett Island. This location is rich in history, dating back to the early 1800s when the Blennerhassetts were prominent figures in the region. Their story is tied to the infamous Aaron Burr conspiracy, adding an intriguing layer to the site’s history.
While on the island, Benson met with Craig Pyles, the park’s superintendent and a two-time WVU graduate, highlighting the strong connection between the university and local heritage. The visit also featured a dulcimer performance by tour guide Scott Cain, showcasing West Virginia’s cultural richness.
