India has just received its final Airbus C-295 military transport aircraft from Spain, marking a crucial step in improving its defense capabilities. This was confirmed by the Indian Embassy in Spain.
The C-295 is a modern transport aircraft with a capacity of 5-10 tons. It will replace the aging Avro aircraft currently used by the Indian Air Force (IAF). The event took place at the Airbus assembly line in Seville. Indian Ambassador Dinesh K. Patnaik and IAF officials were present to receive the aircraft.
Interestingly, this delivery happened two months ahead of schedule. The C-295 can fly for up to 11 hours, making it a versatile option for military operations.
In September 2021, India signed a deal with Airbus for a total of 56 C-295MW aircraft. Out of these, 16 were delivered straight from Spain, while the remaining 40 will be manufactured in India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez inaugurated the TATA Aircraft Complex in Vadodara last October for assembling these planes. TATA Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) will handle the production of the 40 aircraft in India. This complex is noteworthy as it represents the first private Final Assembly Line (FAL) for military aircraft in the country.
The facility will develop a complete ecosystem for the manufacture and maintenance of the C-295s, involving various public and private sector companies. Defense industry experts suggest that this initiative will significantly boost India’s self-sufficiency in defense manufacturing and improve operational readiness.
Statistically speaking, military spending in India rose to around $85 billion in 2022, highlighting the nation’s commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities. As India navigates complex geopolitical landscapes, strengthening its military infrastructure becomes imperative.
