Authorities in Tennessee recently arrested Kevin Wade O’Neal, a 54-year-old man, after he allegedly threatened to kill public officials. He was apprehended at his home in Old Fort, a small town about an hour east of Chattanooga.
During the arrest, deputies discovered what looked like an improvised explosive device (IED). This prompted the Chattanooga Police Department’s Bomb Squad and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) to investigate further. They found a total of 14 explosive devices in O’Neal’s home.
Interestingly, O’Neal reportedly attempted to detonate these explosives when law enforcement arrived. He has been charged with multiple counts of attempted first-degree murder for threatening the detectives and deputies present during the incident.
The dangers posed by homemade explosives are significant. According to the ATF, the number of IED incidents has increased in the U.S. over the past several years. Some social media trends even show a rise in discussions around “do-it-yourself” explosives, which can lead to dangerous situations like this one. Experts warn that these devices can be extremely unstable and pose serious risks to both the maker and surrounding communities.
O’Neal is currently being held in the Polk County Jail, where his bond status has not yet been determined. The investigation into his motives continues, with authorities working to understand the full extent of his actions.
