US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has banned thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative, from all vaccines sold in the United States. This choice comes despite strong evidence from scientists that thimerosal is safe. His decision is based on a recommendation from a newly formed vaccine advisory panel, which some critics say contains people from the anti-vaccine movement.
In a statement, Kennedy said this action is overdue and aims to protect vulnerable populations from mercury exposure.
So, what is thimerosal? It’s a compound that has been used in vaccines since the 1930s. Thimerosal helps prevent bacterial and fungal contamination, especially in multi-dose vials. It contains ethylmercury, which the body processes quickly. This is different from methylmercury, which is found in some fish and can be harmful. By 2001, thimerosal was mostly phased out of childhood vaccines in the U.S. due to public concern, despite numerous studies showing it was safe. Today, it is still found in a few adult flu vaccines and is deemed safe by many health organizations worldwide.
Critics warn that banning thimerosal may make vaccines harder to access. They fear it will reinforce false claims linking the preservative to autism and other developmental disorders. These claims have been debunked repeatedly and were central to Kennedy’s past activism, including his book published in 2015.
Kennedy also restructured the advisory panel, firing the previous members and appointing new ones. The newly formed panel voted in favor of removing thimerosal after a presentation from Lyn Redwood, a known anti-vaccine advocate.
Vaccine manufacturers, such as Sanofi and CSL Seqirus, have said they can meet the demands for single-dose, preservative-free vaccines. The HHS assures that programs like Vaccines for Children will continue without interruptions.
