A Texas House panel has moved forward with a new congressional map designed to help Republicans maintain their edge in the 2026 midterms, backed by former President Donald Trump. This new map aims to shift five Democratic districts to favor Republican candidates. The committee’s vote, which fell along party lines, means the map is one step closer to a full House vote. Texas Democratic Party Chair Kendall Scudder has stated that if the map passes, legal action will follow. He accused state Republicans of suppressing votes for Trump’s benefit and urged Democrats nationwide to prepare for similar challenges.

In Austin, the map is set to eliminate the district of Rep. Greg Casar. This change may force him to compete against another Democrat, Rep. Lloyd Doggett. Insiders expect Doggett won’t back down easily, especially as he commands a significant campaign war chest.
The contours of the new map not only merge existing districts but also reconfigure others to lean more Republican, including seats held by Democratic Reps. Henry Cuellar and Vicente Gonzalez. However, there’s still hope among Democrats that these seats remain competitive due to their incumbents’ performance.
Trump has yet to publicly comment on this latest proposal, but its implications are significant. The political maneuvering is likely to intensify as both parties prepare for upcoming elections.
