GREENSBORO, N.C. — Cameron Young is making waves at the Wyndham Championship. He shot a stunning 5-under 65, which gives him a solid five-shot lead as he aims for his first PGA Tour victory. After a stormy start, he played brilliantly, hitting four straight birdies on the front nine.
Younger showcased his skill with impressive shots, including a 30-footer on No. 4 and a smooth two-putt birdie on the par-5 fifth. “I played some great golf for about an hour,” he said. While he accepted that the back nine was trickier, he still maintained his lead even after missing a short par putt on 14.
Colombian player Nico Echavarria made a push, cutting Young’s lead to four with three birdies in a four-hole stretch. He completed his round with a solid 64. “I’m just focused on my game,” Echavarria noted, emphasizing his commitment to playing his best.
Young, often regarded as the strongest player without a win on the main tour, has come close several times since his rookie season in 2021. He finished runner-up in notable events, including the 2022 British Open. “I’ve played good golf, especially on Sundays,” he remarked, looking forward to extending his lead rather than just settling for second place.
With a current score of 20-under 190, he only needs a 67 on Sunday to break the tournament scoring record. But more than records, winning this championship is vital for his career. Young has his eyes set on making the Ryder Cup team, especially with the event planned for Bethpage Black, where he made history as the first amateur to win the New York State Open in 2017.
“This has been my goal all year,” he shared, underlining the significance of being part of the Ryder Cup team. Earning a win would not only boost his ranking but also re-ignite conversations around his potential for the team. He currently sits at No. 9 in the Ryder Cup standings but was disappointed to miss the team in 2023.
