MADISON — For the 14th year in a row, U.S. News & World Report has named University of Wisconsin Hospitals the best in Wisconsin. This is a testament to the hard work happening every day at UW Health.
Dr. Peter Newcomer, the chief operating officer at UW Health, expressed his excitement. “It’s thrilling to see our progress. From top-notch clinical care to groundbreaking research, we’re leading the way,” he said.
The rankings assess over 4,000 hospitals nationwide. Not only did UW Hospitals grab the top spot in Wisconsin, but it also earned recognition in eight medical and surgical specialties, placing them among the top 50 in the country. These areas include diabetes, ear, nose, and throat, gastroenterology, geriatrics, obstetrics, orthopedics, pulmonology, and rehabilitation. Notably, diabetes and endocrinology, as well as rehabilitation, are newly ranked this year.
UW Hospitals received the highest marks for 18 critical procedures affecting older adults. These include surgeries and treatments for heart issues, cancers, and conditions like stroke and pneumonia.
Dr. Newcomer encourages the community to recognize the exceptional healthcare available in Madison. “We are proud to be among the best in the nation, which bodes well for our patients,” he added.
But what does this recognition mean for the community? According to a recent survey from Gallup, 70% of Americans consider hospital quality critical when choosing where to seek treatment. With UW Hospitals delivering high-quality care, community trust grows, improving health outcomes.
Moreover, UW Health is not just a single hospital. It comprises University Hospital, an expansive facility with 505 beds, and East Madison Hospital, with 83 beds. The system also includes specialized centers like the American Family Children’s Hospital and the UW Health Carbone Cancer Center.
In 2021, the American Hospital Association reported a nationwide trend toward improving hospital quality. UW Hospitals is a shining example of this movement, blending community focus with state-of-the-art medical advancements.
With such accolades, UW Health stands as a cornerstone of healthcare in Wisconsin, ensuring that residents have access to the best care right in their backyard.
