8BitDo has teamed up with Rare, the beloved game studio now under Microsoft, to create an exciting new wireless Xbox controller. Celebrating Rare’s 40th anniversary, this special edition controller boasts a striking gold and blue design, filled with fun nods to its gaming history.
Priced at $89.99, the 8BitDo Ultimate 3-mode Controller connects to Xbox consoles through 2.4GHz wireless or USB-C. Unlike other controllers, it uses a USB dongle rather than Microsoft’s standard wireless setup. You can also connect via Bluetooth for mobile gaming.
This controller is a wireless version of 8BitDo’s popular Ultimate controller. It features advanced hall effect joysticks and Xbox-style impulse triggers, along with two interchangeable joystick caps—a skull from Sea of Thieves and a puzzle piece from Banjo-Kazooie. The D-pad, crafted from zinc alloy, complements the controller’s gold finish.
Customization is a major highlight. You can program three profiles and modify the two back buttons using 8BitDo’s Ultimate software. This software allows you to remap buttons, adjust trigger sensitivity, and customize stick settings, providing a personalized gaming experience.
The controller features a built-in 1,000mAh rechargeable battery, estimated to last up to 20 hours. It takes about four hours to charge fully, and it comes with a convenient charging dock that reconnects the controller automatically.
Interestingly, it’s rare for a studio like Rare to collaborate with an external company like 8BitDo for a product like this. Normally, you might expect Microsoft to create such controllers. Microsoft’s own Xbox Design Lab, which allows players to customize their controllers, has faced delays since December, leaving fans eager for new designs.
In a recent survey, 74% of gamers expressed interest in unique and customizable gaming accessories, reflecting a growing trend towards personalization in gaming. This collaboration not only honors Rare’s legacy but also taps into what gamers want today.
The 8BitDo Ultimate 3-mode Controller is now available for purchase, making it a must-have for fans of Rare and gaming enthusiasts alike.
