Huntington University is excited to introduce two new online programs aimed at supporting educators. Set to launch on August 25, these programs focus on Early Childhood Education and Exceptional Needs: Intense Intervention, incorporating New Indiana state requirements for Early Literacy. This training is vital, as many schools are in urgent need of qualified teachers who excel in early learning and literacy, particularly for students with exceptional needs.
Dr. Shoshannah Hernandez, a key figure in developing these programs, noted, “We created these courses based on feedback from schools. They are designed to be high-quality and easily accessible, helping educators meet diverse student needs in today’s classrooms.” This approach offers an essential dual licensure option, allowing teachers to earn two credentials simultaneously.
The Early Childhood Education + Early Literacy program prepares teachers to engage with young children, from birth to age 8. It emphasizes suitable instruction methods, family involvement, and integrating literacy strategies across subjects.
In contrast, the Exceptional Needs: Intense Intervention + Early Literacy program offers educators specialized skills to support students facing significant challenges. It combines focused training in customized instruction with insights into language development.
These two new options will complement Huntington’s existing TESOL/EL licensure program, all designed for busy professionals, allowing flexibility through online learning while maintaining interactive, hands-on experiences in real classrooms. This framework aims to equip graduates to have an immediate impact on their students’ lives.
Dr. Luke Fetters, the vice president for academic affairs, adds, “With these new certifications, Huntington University stands out in literacy education in Indiana. They can function independently or serve as part of our Master of Education degree.”
Starting this fall, applications are open for interested candidates. The final enrollment day is August 29, promising an exciting opportunity for teachers eager to advance their skills and credentials to better serve their communities.
As education continues to evolve, programs like this demonstrate a proactive approach to meet teachers’ needs. Research shows that early literacy and well-prepared educators significantly enhance student outcomes. In fact, according to a report by the National Institute for Early Education Research, children exposed to effective early education programs are less likely to need later interventions, highlighting the importance of the skills these new programs provide.
By investing in dual licensure programs, Huntington University isn’t just preparing educators; it’s building the foundation for a brighter future in education. For more information on educational trends, you can explore resources from the National Education Association.
