PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The “tush push” remains a key play in the NFL, and it’s as effective as ever for the Philadelphia Eagles. Even without their star quarterback Jalen Hurts in the preseason opener against the Cincinnati Bengals, the Eagles relied on this tactic right away.
On a crucial fourth-and-goal from the Bengals’ 1-yard line, backup QB Tanner McKee pushed his way in for a touchdown. This play tied the game at 7. “People have a hard time stopping it,” McKee commented after the Eagles won 34-27.
The controversy around banning the tush push stirred debate earlier this offseason. NFL owners came close to rejecting it, with a vote of 22-10, just two votes shy of the majority needed. This play, which has been a staple for the Eagles, was almost banned due to safety concerns and enforcement challenges. Notably, a similar ban was lifted 20 years ago for the same reasons.
Interestingly, when analyzing recent statistics, teams in the league have reported that around 70% of the time teams use quarterback sneaks, they successfully convert on fourth and shorts, highlighting its effectiveness. This suggests that the strategical advantages of the tush push might outweigh the risks, at least from the teams’ perspectives.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell noted that he wanted open discussions about this issue without taking a firm stance. Players’ safety is a priority, but so is the excitement of the game.
Eagles fans, though fewer than usual at Lincoln Financial Field, were thrilled to see their team in action. The anticipation grew when they got into formation for the fourth down play, showcasing the confidence in their strategy.
As the season progresses, it’ll be interesting to see if the tush push continues to dominate short-yardage situations. Keeping this play in the playbook certainly adds a unique twist to the game.
