Application fees for Texas public colleges will be waived for in-state students from October 13 to 19. This new initiative, part of Texas Senate Bill 2231, was signed by Governor Greg Abbott on June 21. The bill aims to make applying to college easier by eliminating these fees during designated periods.
Applying to the University of Texas currently costs $75 for domestic students seeking an undergraduate degree. However, during the second week of October, students can submit their applications through ApplyTexas without paying this fee.
Texas House Representative Terry Wilson, who helped sponsor the bill, emphasized the importance of reducing financial barriers for families. He noted that many students often apply to several colleges, which can quickly add up in application costs.
Valentina Balladares, a high school senior in Texas, shared that being able to waive application fees would allow her to apply to more colleges, something she wouldn’t have been able to afford otherwise. “This opportunity helps students from low-income families who may not have extra resources,” she explained.
State Senator Royce West, who also co-authored the bill, pointed out that having a consistent opportunity to apply for state universities without fees is crucial. “It’s a way to ease the financial pressure of applying to college,” he said.
This new initiative aligns with a growing trend across the U.S. aimed at making college more accessible. According to a 2023 report by the National Association for College Admission Counseling, over 60% of students find application costs burdensome. Waiving fees could significantly boost college applications, particularly among students from lower-income backgrounds.
