Box Office Buzz: ‘Weapons’ Soars with .7 Million Preview Earnings, While ‘Freakier Friday’ Follows with .1 Million

The box office is heating up this Friday with two new films vying for the top spot: “Freakier Friday” and “Weapons.” It looks like a showdown between comedy and horror!

“Freakier Friday,” a sequel to the beloved Disney classic, brought in $3.1 million during Thursday previews. On the other hand, Warner Bros.’ horror thriller “Weapons” surpassed that, raking in $5.7 million.

Starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, “Freakier Friday” is expected to earn between $27 million to $30 million this weekend. This sequel features double the body-swapping, involving Lohan’s character Anna, her daughter Harper, and her soon-to-be stepdaughter Lily switching bodies with matriarch Tess, played by Curtis. The film has a budget of $42 million and includes familiar faces like Chad Michael Murray and Mark Harmon, along with newcomers like Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Vanessa Bayer.

In contrast, “Weapons,” directed by Zach Cregger, is a darker tale. It follows a group of 17 schoolchildren who mysteriously disappear, leaving their community in turmoil. The film stars Josh Brolin and Julia Garner and had a production budget of $38 million. It promises a mix of suspense and horror that many fans are looking forward to.

Both films are competing against Marvel’s “Fantastic Four: First Steps.” After a stellar $117.6 million opening, “Fantastic Four” faced a steep drop of 66% in its second weekend. Recent statistics show that many films experience a similar decline after a strong opening. If it falls by another 50%, it’ll find itself in the same spot as “Captain America: Brave New World” and “Thor: Love and Thunder,” which faced similar downturns.

Interestingly, box office trends indicate that audiences are flocking towards nostalgia and familiar franchises. Social media buzz suggests that fans are excited about the return of Lohan and Curtis, while others are drawn to the suspenseful plot of “Weapons.”

As movie-goers decide between laughs or chills this weekend, it’s clear that both “Freakier Friday” and “Weapons” are set to leave their mark at the box office.
