A 17-year-old was arrested after a shooting in Times Square, New York City. The incident took place around 1:20 AM on Saturday. Three people were shot during a fight outside a Raising Cane’s chicken restaurant.
The police reported that a handgun was found at the scene. A 19-year-old man was shot in the foot, a 65-year-old man was hit in the leg, and an 18-year-old woman was grazed in the neck. Thankfully, all three were taken to the hospital and are in stable condition.
This event comes just three months before the New York mayoral election. It also coincides with federal efforts to address youth crime. President Donald Trump recently sent federal agents into Washington D.C. to tackle rising crime rates.
Interestingly, crime statistics tell a different story for New York. The city has recently seen low levels of gun violence, a welcome change. Last month, however, there was a tragic shooting in Manhattan where four people lost their lives in an office building.
In contrast, Washington D.C. has been dealing with a higher homicide rate. So far this year, 98 homicides have been reported, marking an upward trend compared to past years. A recent federal report indicates that the city saw its lowest overall violent crime numbers in 30 years last year, despite the current rise in homicides.
