A tragic shooting occurred in Atlanta on Friday near both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Emory University. A police officer responding to the scene, David Rose, was killed. He was just 33 years old and had graduated from the police academy only months earlier.
Initial reports came in around 4:50 p.m. about an active shooter situation on Clifton Road, leading both institutions to go into lockdown. Officers soon found Officer Rose critically injured at the scene. He was rushed to Emory University Hospital but unfortunately did not survive.
Authorities found the suspected shooter, identified as Patrick Joseph White, 30, of Kennesaw, on the second floor of a CVS Pharmacy. He had gunshot wounds, but officials are still determining their origin—whether they were self-inflicted or from police return fire. Remarkably, no civilians were injured during the incident, although four people were treated for anxiety-related symptoms at a hospital.
Who Was Officer Rose?
Officer Rose served in the U.S. Marines before joining the DeKalb County Police Department. He leaves behind a wife and two daughters, with a son on the way. His demise highlights the risks that law enforcement officers face daily. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens expressed deep condolences and emphasized the need for gratitude toward those who protect the community.
The CDC Incident
The CDC’s Director, Susan Monarez, confirmed that four of the campus’s buildings were struck during the shooting. In a letter to staff, she remarked how heartbroken she was over the attack and assured that a security review would take place before employees returned to the office.

This incident isn’t isolated. Just two days prior, a shooting at Fort Stewart left five military members injured. The suspect there, an active-duty soldier, is believed to have opened fire due to unresolved personal issues.
