Jen Pawol made history as the first female umpire to officiate a Major League Baseball (MLB) game during the regular season. At 48, she took charge of first base during a matchup between the Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves.
“It felt amazing to be out there,” Pawol said after the game, reflecting on the emotional atmosphere. Fans welcomed her with cheers and a standing ovation. Signs in the stands celebrated her milestone, stating, “Pawol making HERstory” and “the time has come for one & all to play ball.”
After the game, Pawol donated her game hat to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, marking a significant moment in sports history. She plans to return to the field for future games, including a chance to call balls and strikes behind home plate.
Pawol is a seasoned umpire, having worked over 1,200 minor league games throughout her 30-year career. She grew up in New Jersey, developing a passion for baseball early on.

Her accomplishment mirrors the gradual shifts in sports toward gender equality, similar to when the NBA hired its first female referee 28 years ago. In the last decade, other sports like the NFL and soccer have also welcomed female officials, yet the NHL has yet to see a woman officiate a game.
