DJI Transforms Drone Technology: How Obstacle Detection is Revolutionizing Robot Vacuums

DJI, a leader in the drone industry, is now stepping into the smart home space with its new line of robot vacuums called ROMO. They’ve already made a name for themselves with drones, gimbals, and action cameras. Interestingly, this isn’t their first venture into home technology; they’ve also explored portable power stations and electric bikes.

So why robot vacuums? It’s a natural fit! DJI’s advanced “omnidirectional obstacle sensing” technology, which prevents drones from crashing during flight, translates well to navigating through homes. The ROMO vacuums can dodge furniture with precision, thanks to sensors that can detect objects just a few millimeters away. These models are equipped with two flexible arms, powerful suction at 25,000 Pa, and a self-cleaning docking station.

What’s more, these vacuums come with machine learning capabilities. This means they can learn the best cleaning routes and focus extra time on dirtier areas. Plus, they’ve designed the ROMO to be quieter, minimizing distractions while it cleans. You can even give commands using your voice, making operation easy and seamless.

DJI’s ROMO series features three models: the entry-level ROMO S priced around $650, the mid-tier ROMO A at about $750, and the premium ROMO P, which reaches at least $950. While the initial launch is in China, DJI plans to expand availability to international markets soon.

However, a potential challenge looms. DJI must navigate legislation in the U.S. that may impact their operations. The National Defense Authorization Act could restrict new drone imports unless DJI is cleared by national security agencies. This significant hurdle might hinder their growth in a crucial market.

In 2023, surveys showed that 70% of consumers are considering a robot vacuum, emphasizing the growing interest in smart home technology. This trend, coupled with DJI’s innovative technology, suggests a promising future for their new ROMO vacuums.
