MILWAUKEE — Even Edwin Díaz, the All-Star closer for the Mets, felt the weight of a tough loss on Sunday. After a disappointing performance, he walked off the mound with his head down. The Mets fell to the Brewers 7-6, marking their seventh straight loss.
This defeat tied their longest losing streak of the season. It’s been a rough stretch, with the team losing 11 out of their last 12 games since a series win in San Francisco. They now trail the Phillies by 5½ games in the NL East and their lead over Cincinnati for the final wild-card spot has shrunk to just 1½ games.
Manager Carlos Mendoza expressed frustration, saying, “We can’t be looking at the standings. We have got to start getting the job done.”
Brandon Nimmo remains hopeful. “We can still go on a run. We’ve shown we can rattle off wins,” he said. With their strong roster, he believes the Mets aren’t out of contention yet.
The Mets started strong, leading 6-1 at one point. Sean Manaea, however, struggled during a lackluster performance on the mound, allowing four earned runs over just four innings. The bullpen faced challenges as well, with Ryan Helsley failing to keep the game tied in the eighth inning.
Díaz, who had been solid previously, faced Isaac Collins in the ninth. He threw a slider that Collins hit for a walk-off home run. “I just missed it,” Díaz admitted. “Next time I’ll follow the call.”
The team’s promising start began to fade after they led 5-0 thanks to early runs from Juan Soto, Jeff McNeil, and Cedric Mullins. Mullins, now with the Mets, made a strong impression with his first home run for his new team.
The Brewers, currently leading MLB, capitalized on the Mets’ mistakes, tying the game late and grabbing the win. Mendoza acknowledged, “They pretty much outplayed us.”
This game highlighted deeper issues for the Mets, who will need to refocus if they hope to turn things around in the coming weeks. As the season winds down, they’ll need to step up their game to keep playoff hopes alive.
