Jered Garrison, PhD, has stepped into the role of interim assistant dean for Graduate Studies at UNMC. He began this new position recently, taking on various leadership tasks, including organizing mentoring workshops and dissertation boot camps.
Dr. Garrison is positioned to assist students, faculty, and program directors in overcoming challenges. Karen Gould, PhD, the interim dean, expressed excitement about Dr. Garrison’s appointment, emphasizing the valuable experience he brings from his previous roles, including acting as chair for the pharmaceutical sciences graduate program and vice chair of the department.
Additionally, Dr. Garrison has been involved with the Entering Mentoring curriculum, training faculty members in mentorship over the past couple of years. His efforts in mentoring have not gone unnoticed, as he was recognized as a UNMC Distinguished Scientist in 2023 and won the Outstanding Graduate Student Mentor Award in 2022, highlighting his commitment to graduate education.
Interestingly, many former leaders from Graduate Studies at UNMC have recently moved on to significant positions within the university. For example, former dean H. Dele Davies, MD, became the interim chancellor in 2024. These transitions reflect the ongoing growth and development within UNMC.
Reflecting on his new responsibilities, Dr. Garrison shared his commitment to supporting graduate students. He aims to build on existing programs and find innovative ways to ensure every student has the tools and support needed to succeed.
Statistics show that effective mentorship can significantly improve academic performance. A recent study found that students with strong mentors are 50% more likely to stay in their programs and graduate. This highlights the importance of Dr. Garrison’s role in fostering an environment conducive to success.
Dr. Garrison’s approach is not just about maintaining standards but enhancing the overall graduate experience. By prioritizing mentorship and support, he is set to make a meaningful impact during his tenure.
