The Indian government has announced four new semiconductor manufacturing units as part of its efforts to become more self-reliant, or “Atmanirbhar Bharat.” The Union Cabinet approved these projects in Odisha, Punjab, and Andhra Pradesh, totaling an investment of Rs 4,600 crore. This move aims to boost India’s presence in the global electronics market, especially amid ongoing US-China trade tensions.
Semiconductors are vital for all electronic devices, from mobile phones to cars. Despite being the world’s fourth-largest economy, India currently imports most of its semiconductor components. Building its own manufacturing capacity is crucial for economic stability and security, reducing reliance on foreign supplies.
In recent years, global supply chains have faced challenges, such as tariffs and China’s control over rare materials essential for chip manufacturing. India’s answer lies in establishing its semiconductor plants.
The new facilities will be set up by different companies. For example, SiCSem’s plant in Odisha will focus on Silicon Carbide chips, which are critical for electric vehicles and defense technologies. Meanwhile, 3D Glass Solutions will introduce advanced packaging technologies that enhance efficiency in chip production.
These projects are expected to create over 2,000 skilled jobs and support local economies. They are part of a broader initiative, with a total of ten semiconductor projects approved under the India Semiconductor Mission, contributing to an overall investment of Rs 1.60 lakh crore.
The government believes this expansion will boost India’s semiconductor ecosystem. It complements the growing chip design capabilities fueled by support for various academic institutions and start-ups.
According to a recent report from the Indian Association of Manufacturers of Adapters and Power Supplies (IAMAPS), the semiconductor market in India is projected to grow to $63 billion by 2026, driven by increased local demand and production capabilities.
With these developments, India is set to take significant steps toward becoming a global player in semiconductor manufacturing, reflecting a shift towards domestic growth amidst global uncertainties.
