Danielle Spencer, known for her role as Dee on the 1970s sitcom “What’s Happening!!,” has passed away at 60. Her death came after a long fight with cancer, confirmed by a family representative.
Spencer played Dee, the witty younger sister who often teased her brother Roger and his friends. Her signature line, “Ooh, I’m gonna tell mama,” became a fan favorite. The show, which aired on ABC from 1976 to 1979, highlighted the experiences of Black teenagers in Los Angeles and was inspired by the film “Cooley High.” It left a lasting impact with its dynamic characters, like the goofy Raj and the lovable Rerun.
Tragically, early in the show’s first season, Spencer was in a serious car accident that left her in a coma for three weeks and caused ongoing health issues. She faced multiple surgeries over the years and was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014, leading to a double mastectomy.
After “What’s Happening!!,” Spencer shifted her focus to animals, earning a doctorate in veterinary medicine. She attended the University of California, Davis, and later Tuskegee University. Spencer also appeared in the 1997 film “As Good as it Gets.”
Her co-star, Haywood Nelson, remembered her as a “brilliant, loving, positive warrior.” He emphasized her contributions not only as an actress but also as a passionate advocate for animals.
