How Climate Change Affects Bangladesh: Discover PROSHIKA’s Crucial Role in Building Resilience

Climate change is a hot topic and an urgent issue of our time. It poses significant challenges for people and wildlife alike. Unfortunately, while research is ongoing, effective solutions remain elusive. We need to rethink our approach to the environment.

Climate describes the average weather of a given area over decades. It includes factors like temperature, rainfall, and sunlight. Natural changes occur, but human activities like burning fossil fuels and deforestation drastically worsen the situation. These actions release greenhouse gases, pushing up global temperatures and disrupting ecosystems.

According to the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP-26, limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius is vital. If we don’t act now, future generations will bear the brunt of our inaction. Simple adjustments can make a big difference, like planting trees, using less fossil fuel, and practicing sustainable agriculture.

Bangladesh, due to its geographical vulnerability and high population density, ranks seventh in the Climate Risk Index by Germanwatch. The country faces severe issues like flooding, rising sea levels, and loss of biodiversity. These challenges threaten not only the environment but also the livelihoods of millions.

Trees play a crucial role in combating climate change. They provide oxygen, stabilize the environment, and offer resources for industry and wildlife. A single mature tree can produce significant value by improving air quality and preventing soil erosion. For example, the Keora tree can store substantial amounts of carbon dioxide, contributing to a healthier atmosphere.

In response to climate threats, organizations like PROSHIKA in Bangladesh are implementing various environmental programs. For instance, their “Social Forestry and Climate Change Program” aims to plant millions of trees, promoting awareness while enhancing local ecosystems. Over the years, PROSHIKA has planted about 110 million trees, making a positive economic and environmental impact.

Switching to organic farming is another vital step. Chemical fertilizers harm soil health and biodiversity. PROSHIKA’s ongoing organic agriculture initiatives focus on sustainability and protecting nature. By embracing eco-friendly practices, they support both agriculture and the environment.

Raising awareness about tree planting and its benefits is crucial. Communities can help by planting trees in open spaces, along roads, and in urban settings. Choosing salt-tolerant varieties in coastal areas can also make a substantial difference. Every effort counts in combating climate change and maintaining a balanced ecosystem.

To sum it up, we all have a role to play in protecting our planet. From planting trees to supporting sustainable practices, each action contributes to a healthier future. It’s time to act together for a greener, safer world.
