The Padma River is rising, and it’s causing serious problems in Chapainawabganj. Heavy rains and flooding upstream have left around 8,500 families stranded in the Sadar and Shibganj areas.
According to the Water Development Board, the river rose 3 centimeters in just 24 hours. Even though it is currently 32 centimeters below the danger level, the rising water is already affecting homes, roads, and farmland. This has impacted thousands of people.
In Sadar upazila, about 1,000 families in the Narayanpur and Alatuli unions are dealing with flooded homes. Relief supplies, including rice and water purification tablets, are being distributed to those in need, according to Nurul Islam, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer for Sadar.
Meanwhile, 7,500 families in Panka, Ujirpur, Durlavpur, and parts of Manaksha union in Shibganj are also feeling the effects. Many homes are underwater, and classes in 12 local schools have been suspended due to flooding. Shibganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Azahar Ali reports that relief items like rice, dry food, cash, and purification tablets have reached around 500 affected families.
The Department of Agricultural Extension estimates that around 700 hectares of crops, including rice, corn, and various vegetables, have been submerged. Ahsan Habib, the executive engineer at the Chapainawabganj Water Development Board, notes that while the water level is still rising, the rate of increase is slowing down. If this trend continues, new areas may remain safe from flooding.
Experts say that rising water levels are not just a local issue; they reflect a global climate crisis. According to a report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), dangerous flooding is expected to become more common. Community leaders urge that immediate action and long-term planning are crucial to manage and adapt to these changes.
