The University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) in Somanya, Yilo Krobo Municipality, recently kicked off its fifth-anniversary celebrations. This event, which occurred in the university’s auditorium, gathered local leaders, alumni, students, and partners from various sectors. The theme was “Sustaining steps towards securing our environment: Five years of achievements, challenges and progress.”
In his speech, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Eric Nyarko-Sampson emphasized that caring for the environment is a long-term commitment, not just a one-time action. He highlighted how, in just five years, UESD has become a leader in environmental research and education. The university has introduced innovative programs that align with both national priorities and global sustainability goals.
UESD’s research addresses pressing environmental issues like water management, biodiversity conservation, renewable energy, and sustainable agriculture. Prof. Nyarko-Sampson also noted that meaningful partnerships with governments and organizations have extended the university’s influence beyond its campus.
Historically, the need for UESD arose from a 2014 report to the Ministry of Education during President John Mahama’s era. This report warned that climate change and population growth could hinder Ghana’s socio-economic progress. It stressed the importance of developing skilled professionals who can manage natural resources wisely to address these challenges.
The registrar of UESD, Mary Abena Agyepong, reflected on how the university aims to be a top center for environmental training and research in West Africa. Established in 2020 with only 78 students, UESD now boasts a total of 1,446 students enrolled in various programs.
Seth Terkper, former minister of finance and chairman of the UESD Council, voiced a commitment to ensuring the university is well-resourced. Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey described UESD’s creation as a vital move in tackling the global environmental crisis.
Recent surveys indicate that public concern about climate change is growing. Over 70% of Ghanaians recognize the need for better environmental policies. UESD is poised to play a crucial role in shaping a sustainable future by educating the next generation of environmental leaders.
